Sensors Benefit Automation of Construction Equipment

April 11, 2023
POSITAL’s Christian Fell overviews how sensors can be used to automate construction equipment.

The trend toward automating construction equipment and other off-highway machinery is increasing, and sensors are playing a key role in enabling automation.

Christian Fell, COO of POSITAL, spoke with Bob Vavra, senior content director of Power & Motion and Machine Design (an Endeavor Business Media partner site) at the International Fluid Power Exposition (IFPE) 2023 about the company’s sensors and how they can be used for automation of construction equipment.

Visit our IFPE channel for more video interviews, news and other content related to the year’s largest show for the fluid power, motion control and power transmission industries.

At IFPE, the company displayed its dynamic inclinometers, which Fell said can aid with positioning of excavators and other machines operating in harsh environments requiring dynamic movements. POSITAL also showed its combined version of a tilt sensor and linear position sensor which can be used on work trucks and smaller mobile cranes. Both sensors provide position information necessary to ensure accurate machine movements, an important aspect of automated systems.

Fell also noted the growing importance of sensors for safety and machine electrification.
